The moment I entered; his gaze narrowed on me.

“We meet again,” I mocked.

“What are you doing here? Did you follow me?”

To which, Sonja interjected. “I had a feeling you meant Faye when you told me what’d happened.” Her glance turned into a glare for me. “Did you seriously let loose your fire in public?”

The woman who’d told me to tell no one, spoke about it in front of the stranger, which meant I could be honest. “Barely public. And for a good cause.” I pointed. “I was helping him.”

Being a true man, he snorted. “As if I needed any aid.”

“It was two against one,” I reminded.

“Bah, I could have handled more,” he scoffed.

Sonja shook her head. “Both of you should have known better than to engage.”

“I had no choice. Those two thugs grabbed me first.”

“She speaks the truth about that,” he grudgingly admitted. “The Saurian appeared intent on abducting.”

“And, of course, you had to get involved.” Sonja rolled her eyes. “You’re just like your father, Anakin.”

I snickered and was tempted to parody Star Wars. Who was your father?

“What so funny?” he grumbled.

“Your name. Anakin. As in Darth Vader before he went to the dark side?” I hummed the Imperial March.

“Aren’t you hilarious? Do you really think I’ve never heard that before?” he riposted.

He called out my lame joke. It appeared I was off my sarcasm game. Blame being thrown for a loop.

“Why is he here?” I suddenly asked.

“None of your business, little witch.”

“If you say so, little dick,” I purred with utter sweetness.

The corner of his mouth lifted. “Is that supposed to be more comedy?”

“Are you always this conceited?”

“Are you always this annoying?”

“Children,” Sonja interjected.

Anakin’s jaw tensed. “You forget yourself.”

“And so do you. Let us begin anew as if you’ve just met. Anakin, this is my apprentice, Faye. Faye, meet Anakin, a good friend of mine.”

Was that code speak for ex-lover?

“Hey.” I offered him a cool hello.

He ignored me to say, “You can’t be serious. She’s a little old to be an apprentice.”

“And yet, this is what the Fates have given me.”

“She lacks basic control,” he grumbled.

“She’s practicing.”

He raked a hand through his hair. “Do we really have time for that?”

“We don’t have a choice.”

Cryptic conversations irritated me. “Are we done talking about me yet?”

“No.” Him.

“Yes.” Sonja.

Their opposing replies had me smirking. “Well, now that we’ve settled that, licorice anyone?”
